Food For Free Receives Grants From Local Foundations and Businesses

Local Nonprofit Will Use Funds to Continue Providing Food for People in Need

Cambridge, MA (July 9, 2020) – Food For Free, the Cambridge-based, non-profit organization dedicated to providing every member of the Greater Boston community with reliable access to fresh and nutritious food, recently received multiple, significant grants from local foundations and businesses. Donors include the Avison Charitable Fund, Massachusetts COVID Relief Fund via the Cambridge Community Foundation, the Cummings Foundation, Roy A. Hunt Foundation, and the Yawkey Foundation, as well as significant business donations from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These contributions will help Food for Free continue to provide those in need with free access to nutritious groceries and healthy produce.

Thanks to the support from Avison Charitable Fund, Food For Free can continue supporting Cambridge students and their families by providing groceries while school is out. The grant from the Massachusetts COVID Relief Fund via the Cambridge Community Foundation will support Food For Free’s Summer Markets which provide fresh produce to families in Cambridge and will also help bolster the newly expanded Home Delivery Program which delivers groceries and fresh produce to individuals at high risk for COVID-19 who cannot access a food pantry. Additionally, It will allow additional food distributions to the city of Somerville. Food For Free also has a variety of other programs, which will be supported more generally through grants from the Cummings Foundation, Roy A. Hunt Foundation, and the Yawkey Foundation as well as donations from Harvard University and MIT.

“We are very grateful to our donors for their support as we continue to provide fresh, healthy food to our local communities and those who are part of our expanded Home Delivery program,” said Sasha Purpura, Executive Director of Food For Free. “These grants and donations will allow Food For Free to continue to help the growing number of people experiencing hunger in our communities as Massachusetts experiences a 59% increase in food insecurity due to the COVID-19 crisis.”
