Volunteering during COVID19

We are seeing new impacts from the spread of COVID-19 everyday. While we don’t know what will happen tomorrow, we are doing everything we can to be prepared to respond quickly and flexibly. So many people have already asked us “How can I help?”. As a part of our planning, we would like to create a database of volunteers we can reach out to for assistance when specific needs arise. If you would like to be on that list and are 18+ years of age, please sign up here. We will email this list with specific volunteer opportunities, locations, and times.

In Cambridge, we have been working with city officials, members of the school department, and housing management groups to establish a plan to get food to families in the event of school closures and to our senior populations should that be necessary. We have identified a large number of housing facilities that primarily house seniors or where many of the families we currently serve reside. Food For Free is prepared to provide bulk deliveries of food on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to each of these sites.

We are also working with the city of Somerville to assist with food deliveries. If you would like to volunteer in Somerville, please contact jdutra@somervillema.gov

As volunteer opportunities arise, we will email the list with specifics about time, location, and the specific volunteer duties. Examples include unloading food from trucks, bagging and delivering groceries to apartment doors, or assisting in transporting meals or groceries to individual homes.

In signing up to this list you are not committing to any specific activity, just letting us know you’d like to be contacted when we have specific volunteer needs.

Thank you for your continued support!
