Kitchen Coordinator

Overview:

Food For Free is excited to be hiring a Kitchen Coordinator who is passionate about food justice. This new role will provide critical support for our Heat-n-Eats program that addresses food insecurity in the Greater Boston area. Operating out of our Kendall Square kitchen, the Heat-n-Eats Program packs balanced, frozen meals from surplus prepared food donated by partner food service operators across university, hospital, and corporate settings. This position will report to the Senior Program Manager and may be asked to support additional program responsibilities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead up to 6 Heat-n-Eats volunteer meal packing sessions per week, each 2 hours in length
  • Support all aspects of frozen meal quality and creation in the kitchen: leveraging equipment, crafting meal combinations, improving the packing processes and experience for volunteers
  • Oversee kitchen operations including food safety compliance, cleaning, and sanitization schedule
  • Operate food processing machinery to break down frozen food components, following strict sanitization and cleaning procedure
  • Ensure accurate and timely delivery schedules to and from the Kendall Square kitchen in coordination with Operations team
  • Other duties to support school programing and the overall program department as needed

  • 1-3+ years experience working in a kitchen or food service operation
  • 1-3+ years of experience managing volunteers or leading groups of people
  • Ability & willingness to pass background and drug test for kitchen host-site
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Intermediate level skills with Excel/Google Sheets or database program; including ability to read, create, and manipulate tables and schedules
  • A high level of self-organization and time-management skills
  • Ability to “think on your feet” and problem-solve in the moment, while juggling multiple priorities at once
  • Comfort working with frozen food processor machinery, knives, heat sealers, and other kitchen equipment. Willingness to handle all varieties of fully cooked animal proteins
  • Ability to lift 40-50 lbs. repeatedly and be on feet for several hours at a time
  • Required to pass background screening

Preferred:

  • Experience working in a nonprofit customer service setting
  • Qualified ServSafe Food Handler/Food Manager

We accomplish our mission through food rescue, partnerships with schools, colleges, and traditional food organizations, as well as our own direct service programs. Schedule & Working Conditions

  • This is a part-time position that will work at least 20 hours per week, up to 25 depending on production and inventory needs
  • Exact hours for this position can be determined within the following parameters:
    • 2 evening shifts/week
    • 1 weekend shift/week
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying, and reaching
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, and other activities necessary to perform job duties.

Compensation

 $22-24 hourly
