Overview:
Food For Free is hiring a Marketing and Communications Manager to oversee the planning, development and implementation of marketing, branding and communication strategies. This person is a storyteller, developing original content that stimulates traffic, increases brand awareness and inspires meaningful engagement of volunteers and donors. They will continually test and refine marketing tactics with an emphasis on innovation and creativity.
The ideal candidate will share a passion for the mission and a dedication to the shared vision of Food For Free, building on the culture of philanthropy across the organization. This is a full-time, exempt position that is partially remote and partially in-person at Food For Free’s Inner Belt facility (Somerville) and reports to the Chief Development Officer.
Responsibilities Include:
Marketing & Communications
- Execute an overall marketing strategy to strengthen brand, promote awareness of mission and engage volunteers, donors and other champions
- As the primary storyteller, develop original content that showcases the mission, staff and Food For Free’s work through blogs, social media, website and marketing collateral
- Write for a wide range of audiences to build awareness and interest in the agency and to support fundraising efforts
- Develop email campaigns that convey our value proposition through creative copy, design and scheduling
- Ensure that an equity lens and Food For Free’s core values are infused into all communications
- Create opportunities for partners to share and engage, including blogs, photos, videos and personal stories
- Act as the custodian of Food For Free’s brand, by providing guidelines and coaching to help all departments maintain brand integrity across content, channels and physical spaces
- Develop and execute digital and social media strategies and tactics to increase customer engagement and website traffic, and measure success through analytics tools
- Facilitate active, engaged online community through all social media channels in support of fundraising, events and volunteer initiatives (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.)
- Grow and manage bank of photos and testimonials for internal and external use
Public Relations
- Work with Food For Free’s public relations firm to position the organization as a thought leader in the field of hunger/food access and to secure media placements that promote the organization’s programs, events, funders and campaigns
- Oversee PR agency and other external partners to ensure timely, on budget deliverables
- Evaluate opportunities such as speaking engagements, tabling events, and awards and lead Food For Free’s response/presence where appropriate
- Actively monitor the news and present relevant articles / posts to CDO and CEO
Data & Research
- Set measurable goals, track and analyze marketing data (SEO research, Google Analytics, campaign results, Google Adwords, conversion rates, traffic etc.) to help shape future marketing strategies
- Conduct market research to identify relevant trends and opportunities, and awareness of services from other agencies in local food access
Required Qualifications:
- Creative, fun and collaborative team player
- Five years professional experience in marketing and communications
- Extraordinary writing and communication skills with ability to craft thoughtful, persuasive communications for a variety of audiences
- Proficiency in digital marketing (content, systems, campaigns, measurement)
- Thorough knowledge of digital design tools, search engine optimization (SEO), web analytics (Google Analytics) and Google Adwords, content management tools (WordPress) and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc.)
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Must be able to work independently as well as within a team environment, be flexible, highly organized and be able to prioritize their work
- Metrics-driven marketing mind with eye for creativity

Food For Free is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the Greater Boston community with reliable access to fresh and nutritious food. We accomplish our mission through food rescue, partnerships with schools, colleges, and traditional food organizations, as well as our own direct service programs. In fiscal year 2022, Food For Free distributed more than eight million pounds of nutritious food and reached more than 40,000 people throughout Eastern Massachusetts.

Schedule & Working Conditions
- This is an exempt, full-time salaried role that is partially in-person and partially remote. Periodic evening & weekend commitments.
Compensation: Salary range begins at $55K
