Field of Greens is Growing!

Changes are coming to our Field of Greens program this season.  Field of Greens, which began in 1993, is Food For Free’s own small farm, hosted by Lindentree Farm in Lincoln, Massachusetts. In previous years, farmer Ari Kurtz generously provided us with a quarter-acre of his land, along with tools, seeds, and invaluable farming knowledge. This enabled us to grow nutrient-dense vegetables for distribution to pantries, meal programs, and shelters.

This year, our space will double, thanks to the continued generosity of Ari Kurtz.  Now, we will be able to grow even more nutritious produce, including greens, tomatoes, beets and carrots.  We will also be resuming our partnership with Pine Street Inn this year, which temporarily was on hiatus due to Covid-19.  This partnership brings produce from Field of Greens to Pine Street Inn, increasing the amount of fresh food they can provide to their guests and use in their job training programs.

To ensure that our larger farm space runs efficiently, we are making changes to our volunteer opportunities on the farm as well.  This season, Field of Greens will employ 10-15 regular volunteers who will consistently work weekly with the program throughout the season. Historically, we have had volunteers help harvest one day a week, but with the additional land and associated labor this year, we will have 2 volunteer shifts per week. These regular volunteers will be managed by Joshua Fiagbedzi, our Field of Greens Farm Manager. We currently have several of these volunteer spots filled but there are still opportunities to join this exciting program.  If you are interested in becoming a regular volunteer on our farm, please contact us via email at volunteers@foodforfree.org.
