Meet Renée: School Partnership Volunteer

As Volunteer Appreciation Week comes to a close, we want you to meet Renée Scott, one of our caring volunteers!

Thousands of Cambridge and Somerville students in grades K-12 rely on Food For Free programs for food to make it through the weekend. And we rely on volunteers to make those programs happen.

And Renée is one of those volunteers!

Every week, she is part of a crew that delivers huge insulated tote bags full of individually packaged bags of food to schools across Cambridge and Somerville. Packed in-house with perishable and non-perishable meals and snacks, Renee bridges the gap between Food For Free and students in need every single week by making these deliveries.

When Renée isn’t driving around Cambridge and Somerville for Food For Free, she enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, and puzzles of all kinds! Read more about Renée below and her experiences supporting Food For Free:

What is your work status? (Student, employed, retired…) and what do you do?

“I run a local community group in Somerville, working on ecological restoration in urban areas.”

Tell us how you first got involved with Food For Free:

“When Somerville had a weekend backpack food program for each school, I was part of a group that did the Friday packing every week at ESCS. When covid closed that down, I transitioned to FFF since they were providing the food the backpack program had been.”

What do you wish other people knew about Food For Free?

“If you have any interest in helping, it’s easy to plug in for as little or as much time as you can.”

What advice do you have for people looking to give back to their community?

“There is an enormous need for food in our area. There are really good organizations working hard to address this and they need help (Food For Free, Somerville Community Fridge, Community Cooks to name a few).

If you can give an hour to pack or deliver food for Food For Free or cook a meal for Community Cooks or add some extra items to your grocery cart to drop at a community fridge, it will go to good use.”
