Food For Free Receives $20,000 Grant from Bank of America

Funds to Support the Non-profit’s Food Rescue Program

Cambridge, MA (July 18th, 2019) – Food For Free, the Cambridge-based, non-profit organization dedicated to providing every member of the Greater Boston community with reliable access to fresh and nutritious food, today announced it is the recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The funds will support Food For Free’s Food Rescue program.

Food rescue is at the heart of Food For Free’s work. By recapturing fresh food that might otherwise be discarded, the organization reduces food waste while guaranteeing access to fresh produce and healthy meals for emergency food programs and individuals in need. The program prioritizes whole foods, focusing on fruits, vegetables, and proteins to be redistributed, ensuring Food For Free addresses not only food waste, but also hunger and nutrition with aims to positively impact diet-related disease.

“We are thankful for Bank of America’s support of Food For Free and their shared commitment to eliminating the food insecurity that so many of our neighbors endure throughout Greater Boston,” said Sasha Purpura, Executive Director, Food For Free. “This grant will help us to increase the amount of fresh food and healthy meals we can rescue and distribute in our community.”

Food For Free also captures prepared foods from a multitude of sources through its Prepared Food Rescue program. Staff and volunteers turn this excess food into heat-and-eat, microwavable meals for students struggling with hunger while trying to learn, families sheltered in hotels without access to kitchens, families with young children that can’t afford to put dinner on the table, and other populations that face barriers to cooking for themselves.

“We are honored to partner with Food For Free to help support the economic mobility of individuals and families in Greater Boston by addressing the basic need of food security,” said Miceal Chamberlain, Bank of America Massachusetts President. “Food For Free’s focus on positive change in our neighborhoods helps to ensure that every individual in our community has access to fresh and nutritious food. We are pleased to support their important mission.”
