Volunteer Specialist/Warehouse Coordinator

Overview:

The Volunteer Specialist/Warehouse Coordinator is highly efficient in executing Food For Free’s hunger relief operations in support of its mission. This role will take place primarily in the Production Facility (warehouse) and requires interacting professionally with volunteers, program execution, loading/unloading/inventorying food, and helping maintain equipment. This requires a flexible, dependable, and efficient person who is eager to take on new challenges and is dedicated to providing excellent service to the people and organizations we support. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Volunteer Oversight (~25 hours/week)

  • Lead and train groups of up to twenty corporate and regular volunteers packing grocery boxes
  • Conduct warehouse safety orientations with new volunteers
  • Under supervision of the Manager, ensure all aspects of box packing are successfully executed to create the appropriate number of grocery boxes in a timely manner
  • Work with Operations staff and Manager to ensure smooth flow of program set-up, assembly line implementation, and shift break-down
  • Work collaboratively with volunteer site captains and regular volunteers to effectively run volunteer shifts

Warehouse Operations & Maintenance (~15 hours/week)

  • Warehouse delivery intake, inventory, and order picking
  • Independently covers facility duties, following procedure and best practices including labeling, rotating stock, cold storage procedures, and ‘first in, first out’ principle
  • Help maintain facilities, truck fleet, cold storage, and other equipment
  • Prioritizes tasks properly, supporting Programs and Operations; switches tasks as priorities evolve in real-time, ensures perishable produce is properly stored, and produces accurate, finished bulk packages before stated deadlines

Relationships/Communications

  • Takes ownership of prioritizing warehouse tasks and utilizes experience to guide colleagues in responsibilities
  • Acts as liaison between Operations staff and volunteers to ensure safe and respectful use of shared spaces
  • Communicate with other departments, teammates, volunteers, and clients in a timely and professional manner
  • Provides continuous improvement feedback and communication to management 
  • Fully understands and embodies team and organizational values

General

  • Continuously strives for efficiency, safety, impact, reliability and responsiveness
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • 1-3+ years’ relevant experience
  • Ability to become Pallet Jack certified (in house)
  • Confidence and decisiveness balanced with an open, collaborative work ethic 
  • Follows instructions and procedures accurately and effectively
  • Personal honesty and integrity
  • Valid Drivers License & clean driving record
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly throughout day, every day
  • Able to utilize mobile devices for daily record keeping
  • Excellent interpersonal/relationship skills – a proactive communicator and comfortable working with people of all abilities from diverse ethnic, educational, and professional backgrounds
  • Commitment to social justice, and food justice in particular

Schedule & Working Conditions

  • This is a non-exempt, full time, hourly position.
  • Incumbent will work at the Production Facility Monday-Friday every week. 
  • Schedule includes 7:00AM-3:30PM (including a mandatory 30-minute unpaid lunch break). Shifts may include: split AM/PM, holiday, weekend, and evening shifts.
  • May be required to attend company meetings on non-scheduled work days 
  • This position is by nature physically demanding. Must be able to lift 50 pounds repetitively throughout the day, with crouching and bending, work around heavy machinery, and work in extreme weather conditions. 
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that may require prolonged standing, sitting, and other activities necessary to perform job duties.
