Food For Free’s New Program Names

Introducing our new program names: Heat-n-Eats, Healthy Eats, Weekend Eats, and Just Eats!

Food For Free began in the ‘80s as one of the country’s first food rescue organizations.

Today, while we still rescue millions of pounds of food every single year, we have many different ways in which we get fresh, healthy food out into our communities. Food For Free programs strengthen the food emergency network and supply direct hunger relief to vulnerable, underserved populations across Greater Boston.

In an effort to highlight what makes our programs great—the beautiful, fresh, healthy food— we’re thrilled to share these new logos.

HEAT-n-EATS

Program snapshot: formerly known as Family Meals, Heat-n-Eats Prepared Meals repurposes prepared foods into balanced meals, each containing protein, starch, and a vegetable, for people unable to cook for themselves. These meals are distributed through partnerships with community colleges, schools, and service agencies in the Greater Boston area.

HEALTHY EATS

Program snapshot: formerly known as the Home Delivery Program, Healthy Eats Home Delivery is a critical direct service that brings ~35-lb grocery boxes with assorted perishables including dairy and frozen protein, produce, and dry goods twice a month to low-income households in Cambridge who cannot access a food pantry due to age, illness, or disability.

WEEKEND EATS

Program snapshot: formerly the Cambridge and Somerville Weekend Backpack Programs, Weekend Eats ensures food-insecure K-8 students have access to food on the weekends to return to school Monday ready to learn.

For students enrolled in the Weekend Eats Food Program, weekly bags of meals and snacks are delivered every Friday to schools we partner with in Cambridge and Somerville. For students enrolled in the Weekend Eats Carrot Card Program, reloadable debit cards for groceries are given directly to food-insecure families each month to buy food for their children over the weekend.

JUST EATS

Program snapshot: Beginning as an emergency program during the pandemic but quickly becoming a flagship program, Just Eats Grocery Boxes are ~25-lb boxes of assorted fresh produce, shelf-stable protein, and grains, that are packed and distributed in bulk to various hunger-relief agencies, housing sites, and schools.

In addition to these programs, Food For Free operates many other programs to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our community. Learn more about the impact of our work on our programs page.
