Volunteer Spotlight: Anne Read and the Cabbage Workout

Program: Home Delivery

How long you’ve been volunteering with us?

I began volunteering in September, 2017.

Why do you volunteer with us and what do you enjoy about volunteering?

Graphic design is my “day job,” requiring constant decision making and intense attention to detail. Plus I’m self employed and work alone. It’s a huge relief to have someone say “put 3 oranges in each box,” and then to work with a team of wonderful staff and volunteers to load the home delivery truck. I end each work session refreshed and joyful. Oh, and the free workout: no need to go to the gym.

Any other fun details about yourself that you’d like to share

My other volunteer commitment is with St. James’s Episcopal Church’s Helping Hand Food Pantry, located at the Fresh Pond Apartments off Rindge Avenue. I’m one of three or four others who unload the Food for Free trucks that deliver donations and purchases from the Greater Boston Food Bank. That’s another great workout, moving 50 pound bags of cabbages and crates of apples. We have a great time together and are excited when the delivery includes what we call “crowd pleasers” like tasty pastries or gorgeous strawberries that we know our clients will love when they visit the pantry the next morning.
